- Watch for the lock indicator light to turn off, confirming the dispenser is unlocked
- Test by pressing the water or ice lever
Exact button placement and hold time can vary slightly by model year, so if this doesn’t work on the first try, check your unit’s model number (usually on a sticker inside the fridge compartment) and search KitchenAid’s official support site for your specific model’s control panel layout.
If the Lock Button Doesn’t Work
If holding the button doesn’t unlock the dispenser, the issue may not be the lock feature itself:
- Faulty control lock switch — the physical switch behind the button may have failed
- Door switch issue — some models tie dispenser function to a door sensor; a failed door switch can mimic a locked state
- Stuck dispenser actuator — the mechanical arm that engages when you press the lever can get stuck or worn
